Panmure Golf Club
A story of a golf course that played it’s part in Ben Hogan’s 1953 Open Championship Win.
In 1953 Ben Hogan was crowned Champion Golfer of the year at the nearby Carnoustie Links, in the weeks prior Mr Hogan had learnt the nuances of links golf on the fairways of Panmure.
The 6th hole now carries his name as does the green side bunker built on his recommendation. My film takes a close look at that hole and the magic of Panmure.
Panmure Golf Club can be found just a short 5 minute drive from The Open Championship venue - Carnoustie and although maybe overshadowed by its notoriety, Panmure is in itself a magnificent golf course that carries a wealth of history. Most notably the role it played in Ben Hogans Open victory.
The course opens with 5 holes that act as a warm up for the infamous 6th hole - Hogan. Following Mr Hogan’s visit in ‘53 he had suggested a front right greenside bunker should be introduced, and it was. The hole was now to be known as ‘Hogan’ and the bunker, ‘Hogan’s Bunker’. This hole alone is worth the visit.
Each hole offers it’s own challenge, an abundance of classic links characteristics and as ever the strength and direction of the breeze will plays a part. It truly is a fantastic golf course and a must play. You have my word that you will not be disappointed!
The 19th Hole
A wealth of tradition and history can be found around every corner of the Panmure clubhouse. The walls are decorated with imagery and stories that trace the roots of the golf club and its members back to its inception in 1845.
We received a very warm welcome both on our arrival at the Professional shop and post round in the clubhouse. A perfect place to sit back and realise you have just played a classic that will live long in the memory
